Gluten Free Flour Reviews came about as I’ve been experimenting with a couple of new flours for making pie pastry.
Coconut Flour by Nutiva, I found this flour in Costco – I was excited to find something that would possibly be something I could use for gluten free pie orders. Sunday, I took this Coconut flour out for a spin making pastry shells for Thanksgiving dinner.
I have to say, I was really disappointed. It was dry, when I added more water it still didn’t help. I was basically pasting the pieces of the rolled out dough together in the pie plates. Perhaps, adding an egg to the mix might of helped to make it stick together. The dough itself is sweet, more like a shortcake crust. Cookies maybe? Not the roll out kind. Frying or coating meat?
Ingredients: organic coconut flour
USDA and Non-GMO Certified.
Cost: $10.98 for 4lbs.
Organic Flour – I know it’s got gluten in it, however some of the gluten free people I’ve spoken to said it’s better than the regular flour. My review of it, that it forms nicely – did find that you may need to add more flour to the recipe. You can get it at Costco and I am sure Whole Foods and other specialty stores. Ingredients: Organic red hard wheat, organic malted barley flour
Cost: $13.98 2-10lb bags.
Grocers Outlet – Mixed Gluten Free Flour
A friend of mine tried out the mixed gluten free flour. She made a chocolate cake and it just crumbled, even with all the icing she put on it, still tasted grainy.
